2022: The Challenge + The Reward
Our year started with a bang! Not literally of course, more like a quiet mince pie and a glass of bubbles. Becoming the norm in this climate!
Our first undertaking of the year was with BBC three part series, Football’s Darkest Secret. It was wonderful partnering again with director Daniel Gordon, and we delivered 52 minutes of graphics and vfx for the series.
We then started working with one of British’s icons, on a film which has not yet been announced and is due for a 2022 release. In addition to several in film graphical sequences, we also designed a 4K one minute title sequence which was a lot fun to do – very much looking forward to this release!
During spring we were thrilled to be approached by the powerhouse at DSP to work with them on ‘Twas The Fight Before Christmas – thrilled to be working on an all female producing/directing team. This was our first Apple film, and was great to be working on a project where we could really play with humour and push the possibilities there. The subject matter most certainly led itself to that, and we were more than happy to go along for the ride!
Another female led film we were fortunate to be involved in was the incredible, On The Divide. The film, about the last abortion clinic on the U.S./Mexico border, premiered at Tribeca Film Festival.
Throughout the year, we have also been working on a project which has been about another issue close to our hearts. We really enjoy finding creative, cinematic ways into stories which feels compelling and appropriate to the subject matter, which is often sensitive. This project, about homelessness, struck a chord. We came on board to animate the film, with an all inclusive approach, from scheduling to storyboarding, designing characters to lip syncing along to editing the animatic and delivering the finished piece (in 2022!) We’re really looking forward to sharing this piece, which comprises of 11 minutes of 2D animation, our team has created beautiful work and found a way into a difficult story which feels fresh + exciting.
During the Autumn months we continued the festival run of our animated short, The Amazing Adventures of Awesome. Director Allison Brownmoore was hosted by a children’s film festival in Belgium to attend and give Q+A’s post screening – after so many zoom interviews – it was such a pleasure to be speak with the live audience about the film! And quite interesting to see what questions they came up with…!
And then we come onto our two Sundance films which technically tip us across into 2022 (but who’s counting?) These two films mark Allison’s 22nd and 23rd Sundance film, and we’re thrilled to be involved in the festival again!
Our first Sundancer is the incredible Nothing Compares, about Sinead O’Connor. We’ve came onto the film towards the end of the edit and have been working with Irish director Kathryn Ferguson on a range of in film sequences, primarily photographs and newspapers.
Our second Sundance film has yet to be announced, and we’re exceptionally excited to share when it hits launch! We came onto this film in the early stages of the edit, and have worked on a range of graphical sequences and a few vfx thrown in for good measure. Counting down the Sundance days now…
And finally we have been working on another unannounced film, with the producing team in NY and director in LA. We’re on schedule to deliver early 2022 – watch this space!
This year has been busy, rewarding, exciting and challenging. We launched our first Diversity Placement programme, where were anticipating bringing on board one illustrator for eight weeks – and was so blown away with the talent – we ended up with two illustrators, Yu-Ching Chiu and Ellie Banister. Both women were a great asset to the team and Ellie stayed with us for over three months. The success of the Placement scheme has made us determined to run the program again, and we’re looking forward to doing so in 2022.
Going forth! We’ve already got a few films on the slate for next year, and a couple of series, very much looking forward to the adventure continuing! Onwards + upwards!
