Universal: The Mountain Within Me

It was an honour for our team to create the graphics for The Mountain Within Me, a documentary following the inspiring story of Ed Jackson. Working with director Polly Steele and long standing collaborator – Producer George Chignell from the London based edit.

After a catastrophic spinal cord injury nearly ended his life, the former professional rugby player faced a new reality. The film documents Ed’s incredible journey of recovery as he pushes both his mental and physical limits—conquering the peaks of Snowdonia, the Alps, and the Himalayas, while also tackling life-changing challenges closer to home.

Social Media

Ed’s social media posts are a source of inspiration for many, particularly those in the differently abled community.

Social Media sequences within the film

To capture the profound impact of his words, we put the text of his posts over sweeping, majestic mountain landscapes. Slow, airy camera movements were used to elevate the emotional weight of the words, creating a sense of calm and determination that reflects Ed’s resilience and hope. This combination of visuals and text was designed to mirror the personal strength and the metaphorical mountains Ed has had to climb on his journey.

Video Montage

Our team was tasked with enhancing and unifying an array of phone footage captured during Ed Jackson’s climbs, at home and in hospital. To maintain the authenticity of the raw personal moments while creating a cohesive visual style, we applied a subtle film grain and film colour burn effects across all the clips.

Treating Vertical Video within the film

This approach gave the footage a slightly cinematic feel, adding warmth and depth without losing the spontaneous and real-life nature of Ed’s recovery journey. The grain effect helped smooth the differences between the various video qualities, while the film burn subtly hinted at the passage of time and the emotional weight behind each climb. By enhancing the footage in this way, we were able to visually unify the diverse sources and bring an added layer of emotional resonance to Ed’s incredible story of determination.

“The Mountain Within Me is a very heartwarming story, so it was very enjoyable to work on. I think our greatest challenge and achievement on this project was how to present digital elements, like tweets from Ed Jackson and his followers. We wanted to represent the inspirational nature of their words visually by embedding them in nature. This allowed these graphics to sit side by side with naturalistic scenes from the film.” Kevin, Designer
